Childhood Asthma On The Increase

(SAN DIEGO) "More children are facing problems related to asthma", said Dr. Bruce Prenner M.D., founder of Allergy Associates Medical Group. "In fact, some studies note that up to 20% of all children may have asthma.

There is also new evidence that asthma is "environmentally acquired". It has become more prevalent in developed countries and is more likely to be a problem for children and adults during the winter season. "Cooler temperatures mean more families stay indoors," said Prenner. "Unfortunately that means the likelihood of increased symptoms caused by allergens such as dust mites, mold and pets".

Asthma may also interfere with childhood education, according to Dr. Bruce Prenner, M.D., of Allergy Associates Medical Group. "Often children with allergies and asthma concentrate poorly. They may feel cranky, listless and disinterested. In fact, childhood allergies may cause problems that last a lifetime," said Dr. Prenner.
