ASTHMA EPIDEMIC? Seventeen million people in the U.S. suffer from asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's a 75% increase from 20 years ago. Asthma is a chronic lung disease caused by swelling and tightening of the airways within the lungs. While symptoms vary, some common ones include: coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing.
"Triggers" such as smoke, pollution or a cold can aggravate lung airways and bring on an asthma attack. A recent study notes that four out of five Americans either have the disease or have a loved one or friend who suffers from asthma. ALLERGIES ON THE INCREASE According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, about 38 percent of Americans suffer from allergies. Previous reports estimated that 15 to 20% of the population has allergies. That's much more than experts originally believed. Many survey respondents are not aware of available treatments.
56% of those polled said they live in households and at least one family member who have allergies. Among those, 60% knew only of medications or avoidance for treating conditions. They were also unaware of immunotherapy, also know as allergy shots. For more information, please call Allergy Associates Medical Group at (619) 229-2355.
